June 5th is World Environment Day – it’s the one day of the year where we are forced to look at our impact on the environment. World Environment Day is not only an opportunity to address our own personal responsibility to take care of the earth. It’s also a great time to make an effort towards making small changes to our businesses to become greener and more energy efficient. Not only can these small changes help to save our environment but they can also save the business money. Got your attention now haven’t we?! Here are five simple steps business owners can adopt to save money and have a positive impact on the environment.
It’s that simple – recycle everything that can be recycled. Also a more abstract way of recycling could be looking at second-hand options when buying office furniture. A quick Google search and you can find some great sites that offer second-hand furniture that looks as good as new.
Find out your energy usage
Once you know exactly how much energy your business uses you can then work out where the wastage is. The Carbon Trust and The Carbon Neutral Company offer a helpful online calculator. Poor insulation, an old boiler and equipment left overnight not only waste energy but money too, in the long run. Something like putting a computer on standby or turning it off overnight instead of leaving it on can save about £35.00 a year. It’s small costs like this that may seem insignificant by themselves but they add up over the year and will make a huge difference to your annual running costs if you get on top of everything.
Ditch the car
When it comes to travelling to work reduce the carbon footprint of your business by embracing the rush hour and using public transport. For those where the option is possible consider cycling or walking to walk which reduce your carbon emissions to zero. If you do need to drive why not look into car sharing with colleagues?
Buy energy efficient equipment
Not only will you be helping the environment but your business may be eligible for tax allowances by purchasing energy-efficient equipment. Check out the Energy Technology List to see which products are eligible.
Change your bulbs
Switch to energy saver (CFL) or LED lightbulbs. Although you’ll have to shell out more money for them in the outset, the savings will become apparent. Not only do they last longer than regular light bulbs but they use far less energy. More importantly though you’re helping the environment so it’s win win.
If you do decide to go green make sure you shout about. It could be the thing that sets you apart from your competitors. Create a page on your website listing your green credentials. If you are a larger business there is always the option to have your carbon footprint, emissions and reductions verified by either the Carbon Trust and The Carbon Neutral Company although there is a cost for this service. What ever you decide to do remember every little helps and lets do our best to make sure that the earth is here to enjoy for generations to come! Happy World Environment Day!
